“Wedding Terminologies 101”

During the weekend I was looking at some wedding terminologies that all of my brides share with me during their planning.  All weddings are different of course, but nevertheless they also have many things in common, so here is a look at some of the terms and definitions that are associated with them.

1. Cake, Royal Icing:  a hard, brittle and not-very-tasty type of icing made of sugar and egg whites.  It’s used mostly for sculptured decorations, like roses, swirls and dots.

2. Catering, Canapé:  any bite-size appetizer served on a small round of bread, cracker or vegetable.

3. Ceremony Music, Prelude:  quite, gentle background music played at the beginning of the ceremony, as guest arrive and are seated.

4. Flower, Pomander:  a round “ball” of flowers suspended from a ribbon handled.

5. Chuppa: a wedding canopy decorated with flowers that are an integral part of the traditional Jewish ceremony.

6. Bridal Party:  people participating directly in the wedding ceremony.

7. Officiant: person who officiates the marriage ceremony making it legal and binding.

8. Sand Ceremony: part of the marriage ceremony when the couple pours two different colors of sand into one vessel symbolizing how their lives have become intertwined.

9. Unity Candle: pillar candle that is lit by the couple from two individual taper candles that were previously lit by the mothers of the bride and groom. Symbolizes the intertwining of their two lives.

10. Commitment Ceremony: term for a same-sex marriage that is a legally or socially recognized marriage between two persons of the same biological sex.
