“Pearls for Weddings”

Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy-Onassis, Michelle Obama and me… what do you think we all have in common? We love pearls! Yes, although I consider myself a modern woman I totally like the classy elegance of pearls.  I find amusing the way you can add them to any dress and make it fashionable and sophisticated in an instant.

Pearls are a hard object produced within the soft tissue of a living shelled mollusc as defined by Wikipedia. They are the only gemstone created by living organisms which made them very unique and valuable, as no two are the same. There are many interesting facts about them that you may not know like:

  • The oldest one know was in possession of a Persian Princess in the year 500BC.
  • Back in time, for the romans they meant wealth and social standing.
  • The Greeks used to believe that they were tears from the gods so, if a Bride wear them they will not cry and have the gods’ marital blessing. They also meant success, happiness, purity, beauty and love.
  • There was even a time in history when some European countries would not allow anybody except the noble family to wear them.
  • It is said, that in 1916 Jacques Cartier change two pearls necklaces for his store on 5th Avenue.

Royalty use the pearls for many traditions especially for their weddings. Influenced by that nowadays is customary for some families to pass them from generation to generation. There are many ways in which you can incorporate pearls to your wedding.
